Whistle should be carried by doctor for example (5)

B _ O _ N

I've eventually managed to convince myself of an answer and an explanation, but I'd be interested to know if everyone else reached the same conclusion (rapidly or otherwise).

I've gone for BLOWN (Whistle should be) but can't figure out why - what's your explanation?

In my trusty Chambers one definition of "doctor" is "in some warm countries, a cool sea-breeze conducive to health".

Therefore "carried by doctor for example" would be "blown" to match up with "whistle should be".

I've been trying to justify my answer in various ways but I think this is it.

Blown means "carried by the wind" and "doctor for example" is a reasonable way to define wind so you're right.

I'm glad you looked it up, Telberts42 - I was wondering as well.

Thanks, guys. My trusty Chambers led me to the same explanation.  Nice to know I wasn't alone.
