Using reference non related to profession?
3 Answers
Im applying for a new job, One of my previous jobs does not want to be a reference even if my performance sheet reads excellent in all aspects, my supervisor refused to be a reference because we disagreed on something before i left the job. Other jobs i had before where non related to the profession im in now. What do i do about the references? i cant give my new employers my previous supervisor's information. Can i use other references that arent related to my profession to land a position. Please HELP!! and thanks a bunch.

I'm sure that they can't refuse a reference and they have to be very careful (legally) in giving a 'bad' reference. The very least would be a statement of the hours worked and the date you commenced / resigned. I used to work in Personnel and one lady requested a reference after she'd been dismissed. (For stealing a computer!). They gave her one, albeit the 'basic' hours and dates and the fact that her timekeeping was good!
You can use anyone as a character reference, but as said above maybe someone you got on well with at your previous job rather than the supervisor could provide you with a work related reference. Your new employer will want some comfort that a) you worked where you have said and did what you said you did; and b) that you were a responsible, reliable and hoipefully competent person. You should approach someone in your company, and obtain their permission so that the prospective employer can contact them and be able to discuss your work history in a civil manner.
