Sally Has Eaten Some Chocolate!

She got into a box of filled chocs and has eaten 3 white and three milk. Looking at the weights I'd guess the milk chocs are about 35gm...minus whatever the filling weighs.
She seems ok…..what should I be looking for in case it does affect her? Can I still feed her later...assuming she wants food?

High temperature, disorientation, panting.
As they were white and milk chocolates she may have got away with it.
When my GSD ate a block of Green and Blacks we had tor rush her to the vets.

Looking ate wolfs chart,it seems she would have had to eat quite a bit more than she has for a mild reaction. I imagine its been about 6 hours or so since she ate it.

Keep an eye on her. You could ring the vets when they open and ask for their advice. I hope she will be o.k., pasta.

Thanks Tilly. She's being her normal self at the moment..snoozing on the sofa.
I just looked at a page of info for vets,and it says symptoms show 6-12 hours after ingestion. Fingers crossed.

Have a look onthe box and see if it tells you the % of cocoa in the different chocolates. You might need that information if you do have to take her to the vets.

She'll be absolutely fine.

Our old dog broke into our living room one Christmas and decimated our chocs! She ate significantly more than 6 chocs and was fine. She was a medium sized dog.

Although chocolate is harmful to dogs the amount they have to eat for any damage is large very much more than your dog has eaten , it would need to be several 100g to have a chance of harm.

I don't think that is is poisonous to all dogs - as Eddie's food disposal system shows. Our first dog used to get a Yorkie bar (for truckers!) every Friday evening from my mum.

That said it is best not to give them anything that has the potential to harm them - explaining that to a dog is another matter.

'Chocolate contains theobromine, which, although tolerated by humans, is extremely toxic to man’s best friend. The darker the chocolate, the greater the amount of theobromine. Toxic doses vary according to the size of dog and cocoa solid content of the chocolate. As a rough guide, Dogs Trust estimates that 50g of plain chocolate could be enough to kill a small dog, such as a Yorkshire Terrier, while just 400g could be enough to kill an average size dog.'

Mine ate 3 boxes of Christmas Thorntons boxes which were under the tree one year. The only reaction from her was she spent the night throwing up.

My dog got on to the table once and eight 6 huge easter eggs, when we were out, I just observed her for 48 hours, dogs are pigs in diguise. But she was fine,

I hope Sally is okay Pasta. I am amazed that you didn't get one lecture on irresponsible dog owners on this thread. Dogs and cats are like toddlers - no matter how clever you think you are they are one step ahead of you looking for some food or mischief to get into.

How is her brother Caspar doing?

Lol...hi wolf. I'm surprised...and relieved..also. Some of the stories told have me cracking up. :-))
She's been OK...bit of a loose poo earlier..but that is normal for her,and she's eating normally also.
As for Caspar...anybody want a cat?... He's been exceptionally mm oisey lately,and the urge to throttle him is great...grrrr

I mentioned to someone a couple of weeks ago that I wanted to kill Merlin. She lectured me and told me that if I didn't love or want her I should re-home her. I still want to throttle her though - she just sits on the desk beside me going "eek" and then leaps on the keyboard.

I am glad that Sally is okay - but doggy diarr-whatsit is not pleasant - my two were big dogs and big dogs do big farts.
