4 down: Hideout erected beside bridge

The answer is RIALTO. Rialto is a bridge across the grand canal in Venice. In terms of parsing the clue, I see Lair (hideout) backwards (erected as it's a down clue) but I cannot see how "TO" is got from the clue. I'm thinking, for example, James & Eric, Trevor besides where besides could be substituted for too, but that would be too not to. What am I overlooking?

Thanking you in advance.

To - beside
beside...to?
I don't understand your references to men's names?
Question Author
I do not see that to= beside. Could someone put these words in a sentence please to show me how they can be interchanged please.

My reference to men's name's was meant as an example to show that beside can be interchanged with TOO not TO
Hideout erected = lair reversed
Chambers gives a definition of to as beside
Rial + to = bridge

Okay, thank you I see it now. to and beside can be used interchangeably when making comparisons: Meriam-Webster have the following example of a sentence for beside:

These problems seem unimportant beside the potential benefits of the new system.

Clearly beside in the sentence above could be substituted for to.

Thank you for your help.
