James, while John had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had a better effect on the teacher.

I really can't think of a sentence containing and and and and and.
How many times...?

The space between "Marks" and "and" and "and" and "Spencer is too small.
Question Author
Well done Jeffa, now try 9 "had"
Tommy wrote "and and" and "and and" was right. (in an exam)

when a sign writer painted the words 'fish-and-chips' above a chip shop... the proprietor said to him "i do not want dashes between the words fish and and, and, and and chips"
James, while John had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had a better effect on the teacher.
jeffa, that doesn't make sense. (Not that mine is any better...)

Reading that the name of the shop would be Marks and and Spencer.

Sorry to be pedantic...
Yes it does, and no it doesn't.
Had, i think, is the one I've heard before-
tommy had had "had had" had he got it right (or something. Not sure about 9- unless had is a name)

2sp - Jeffa should have said "spaces" not "space.

Seems to be on a par with the OPers other questions
;-)
Jeffa's is perfect
I still read it as Marks and and Spencer, bhg481, regardless of space or spaces.

Am I being thick?
Question Author
You're too good at this Jeffa - these are two I came across 50 years ago.
2sp_ - couldn't possibly comment.
bhg - me too. Both pretty well known, though.
And and and and and are words.
Ahh, wait a minute, I see it now.

It's "Marks" and "and", and "and" and Spencer.

What a difference a comma makes. :-)
Question Author
2sp - two spaces are too small. One is between "Marks" and "and". The other one is between "and" and "Spencer". Hence the spaces between "and" and "and" AND "and" and "Spencer" are too small.
It doesn't need a comma to make sense.
Does to me jeffa.
