Di(a)meter could be a mathematicians line - "not a" is Dimeter (a verse of 2 measures)??
Well it's a line of verse consisting of two metrical feet.
The metrical feet being the mathematicians line perhaps.
Bit of a cockeyed explanation really!!!
It means without A it's a poets line.
