Off to NYC. My partner has never been. Has anyone got any favourite restaurants or things to see or do which are not the usual sights, things which surprised or interested them ? For example, last time I went, I found a cable car across the river; guide books were a bit short on that; and the Central Park Zoo was a surprise because nobody played that up, but it was charming.

When I went Johns Pizza was a must http://www.johnsbrickovenpizza.com/
I also loved the Circle Line boat trip but expect that's in all the books. The only thing that surprised me was how small the Statue of Liberty is.
If your looking afor a good selection of beers....and a fab menu.. we can recommend the Heartland brewery...cant remember the Street name.. but its in one of the main streets off Times Square... big sign you cant miss it....well worth a visit... make sure your hungry.... and have the creamed spinach... YUMM...and for fab sandwiches... fries and..to die for fried onions...Maxie's diner..in Times Square... the barmaid in there was called Candy.. she was a sweetie...look out for her!
Canal Street market
My favourite building was Grand Central Station, which has shops and restaurants inside, some of them on lower levels. The oyster bar has good reviews, but I don't 'do' shellfish so didn't try it out. Look out on the main concourse for the stars on the ceiling - allegedly back to front! There was a Starbucks inside the Trump Tower on 5th Avenue, which anyone could go to. It was up one floor (so the 2nd floor) and looked onto a lovely marble waterfall. If you're in New York on a Sunday then I would highly recommend the revolving restaurant on top of the Marriot hotel in Times Square. It does the most amazing Sunday buffet. Probably good at any time of the week, but I've only been for the Sunday buffet!

Grand Central Terminus is my favourite building there. too, spudqueen. The only railway station where you can't see any trains!

The Marriott restaurant sounds a great idea.
Went there last year. The Tenement Museum is worth a look. It has themed tours on different immigrants (Irish, Italian, Jewish etc). Top of the Empire State is a must. Coney Island is quite nice, but avoid Nathan's hot dogs - vile! St Patrick's Cathedral is stunning. And a boat trip is a definite.

Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) has good views over Central Park - further uptown than the Empire State building, and easier to get to the top of it. But that's probably in guidebooks these days.
You could do the High Line walk but it might be a bit nippy at this time of the year.
