Increasing one does not automatically reduce the other, and vise versa. This is because the methods used to increase muscle mass (anaerobic exercise) and those used to reduce fat (aeorobic exercise) are two different things. To achieve both you need to do four things. 1. A program of weight training, under supervision and over a period of time, to build muscle mass. You can use dietry suppliments to assist with this, but unless you are hoping for the body of a bodybuilder, this should not really be necessary beyond a good, healthy, diet plus a regular protien suppliment, eg one of the many protien milk shake products available. 2. Embark on a program of anaerobic exercise, such as running, swimming, cycling, rowing etc. This will again need to be done regularly and initially under some guidance from someone who knows what they are talking about. 3. Look at your diet, you need to reduce useless saturated fats and sugars, and boost your protien, vitamin and mineral intake. 4. You must give your body enough rest to actually use all this exercise and nutrition to good effect, so make sure you get plenty of sleep while you are training.
Be aware, this will not happen overnight, so dont be discouraged if you dont see huge results overnight, but believe that gains won slowly and with dedication will also last longer and be worth more too!
Good Luck!
