I guess this is the right section... I need to make a fabric banner for my daughter's school club (something quite big). Can anyone advise me as to what fabric to use (that paint won't bleed into), and do I need to get special fabric paint? Any other tips gratefully received (don't know why I volunteered for this)!

Calico is a good starting fabric.
The banner need not be painted, you could draw on the design in pencil and then use glue and fabric as a collage type.
Banners can be very tricky.  Beware of making it too big as you have to consider the weight of the cloth and the poles.  Large banners can act like sails and take off if it's windy.  Make sure the littlies can carry it before you make it.  Large felt tips can be useful rather than paint.
Another reason for not making it too big, is that people will be able to read it if it is not flapping too much.  If the television cameras will be there, you don't want people at home to be wondering what it said.  Also big banners need bigger poles - if an incident happens, you do not want to have just hit someone accidentally.
