Care Home Costs
5 Answers
I recently raised a similar question in discussion here and thank those who replied, but there is one aspect I would like to know a bit more about if someone can help please. When the financial resources of a person in a care home have all been used up, I understand the state will then take over. Is that person then left with absolutely nothing, or are they allowed to keep a small amount as 'pocket money' to spend on essentials such as toiletries, clothing, etc.?

No matter what your financial situation you will always be left with at least £24.40 per week to spend on whatever you want.

At the care home I worked in the residents got a 3 course fresh cooked lunch 7 days a week plus tea ,coffee and biscuits twice a day. They also got £10 worth of food items each a week included in the rent, each flat had basic cooking equipment, toaster, kettle, microwave so they could prepare breakfast and snacks. All their laundry was collected twice a week washed ironed and returned . This was in addition to their £24.40 a week or whatever , so they had very little they needed to spend money on.
^^ It is down to each individual home there is no national scale, you just have to look round and ask different homes for their rates. The place I worked in was £550 a week but that was 2 years ago. There are different types of home, ranging from 'assisted living' which are basically just flats with alarms and a warden to full 24/7 one to one intensive care.
