I dont get the guardian lloyd1e so I may be way off base here, but the definition of the word is as follows:

Araucaria ia a genus of conifers in the Monkey puzzle family Araucariaceae. They are familiar to many people as the genus of the distinctive conifer the Monkey-puzzle, Araucaria araucana.

monkey puzzle tree is also known as the "baobab tree"
Almost kev100 except a monkey puzzle tree is also known as a Chilean Pine,  a baobab tree is known as a "monkey bread tree".

Araucaria is a, well I would say *the*, crossword compiler in the Grauniad.

As to 'kind', can you give us the context of the clue?

Question Author

There is a general comment/hint (i.e it isn't a numbered clue) from Araucaria which is as follows:  Nearly half the solutions are of a kind and their clues may lack further definition.  Thanks

'kind' to which Araucaria refers are African countries.

Oh right.  In these cases, Araucaria is indicating that all of those answers are on a similar theme.

He is an elderly clergyman, by the way.  Just thought I'd throw that irrelevance in.
