New Dog At 1 Year Old Around 5 Year Old And 3 Year Old
6 Answers
A girl on a Facebook website is selling a dog aged 12 months. It looks like he’s mixed with a staffy and boxer type dog. He’s very beautiful and I’d love to give him a home.
He has apparently been around children before and I have taken my girls to see him and he seemed fine.
He was found aged 12 weeks wrapped around a lamp post with some wire. He then broke his ankle at 6 months, which has now healed.
He’s house trained and fine around cats. My question is, would you buy a dog at this age if you have children this young?
People are saying I shouldn’t as he could turn on the children and obviously if this happened I would never forgive myself. My partner has suggested getting one from a pup, but personally would rather have one a bit older as he will be going to the pound otherwise.
I’m picking him up tomorrow for a few hours to see how he gets on. I just don’t know what to do now?
Has anyone ever bought an older dog around children and what are the chances of something actually happening?

One word of caution I would offer - without seeing the dog I can't say for sure but from your description I would be very worried it could be mistaken for a Pit Bull Terrier or Pit Bull type, both of which could be seized by the authorities at any time. How would your family feel if at some point in the future the dog was taken away and you taken to court for ownership of an illegal banned dog (whether or not it is actually one). Breed Specific Legislation is a total nightmare for anyone with a bull breed, and personally I would not take the risk.
We rescued a 6 year old American Bulldog, she is now 11 and is and always has been amazing around children - even very small ones. I think it's a shame people don't give older dogs a chance with children (supervised obviously). A friend of mine had a dog from a puppy and was never able to trust him with children - it really does depend on the dog. Staffies and Boxers are will known for being good with children. i hope you can give him a chance he sounds as if he has had a rotten time so far Bless Him.
