Do you have a box of odd buttons in your house? My mother and grandmother had large tins of buttons of all different sizes, shapes, patterns and colours.

Nobody in this house knows how to sew a button on.

I was actually thinking of my nans sewing box today when I changed the bed and one of the buttons on the duvet cover was missing. Whenever I need to sew something I always have to buy new needles and thread.

No...we don't have a collection.
Yes.
I have a button jar, does that count? ;-)
My mother has a large tin of buttons and still darns socks!
Oh another thing I remembered recently was my grandmother had a dust pan and brush for the table.
Mr.AC tried to throw out a pair of jeans yesterday. I asked him why, as they were in good condition. He told me he was throwing them out because the button was loose. I don't have a box of buttons, but i am capable of buying the right one. He can be very wasteful - he was close to binning a pizza earlier as it has todays BBE, so it's currently baking in the oven ready to put into his lunchbox tomorrow
I remember the device my mother had for darning socks. Think it was called a mushroom.
Thats the one!
Hi hc, my mum had a large button tin yes. I suppose it was an era when people made clothes & repaired as a necessity really, I know my mum did. It became old fashioned to make & mend, now having a massive revival! My mums button tin would come out for her grandchildren to play with all the different shapes & colours :0)
No. I HATE buttons. My mother had one though.
My grandma lived in a flat in Edinburgh everyone had their turn to clean the stair. You never see that happening anymore.
I have a box of random buttons around...somewhere. I usually 'find' it when I'm looking for something else.
My nan did as did my mum and so do I, it's a pretty glass box. It's become an ornament because I can't remember the last time I sewed a button on.
Oh yes, Hc.....I played for hours with my Aunt's button box when I was a child.....learning to sew and making those whizzy things on thread.

I have a goldfish bowl filled with buttons....the fish died years ago.....and I use lots of buttons on hats, cushions and bags....
It's to be buried with me....x
