Occurrence often spelt with just one 'r'
Sacrilegious often spelt as sacreligious
The rule to remember with words like occurrence is that if the root word, in this case occur, ends in a single vowel followed by a single consonant, then the final consonant is doubled when adding a suffix, providing the final syllable is stressed. If unstressed then no reduplication. For example:
befit - befitting, but:
benefit - benefiting.

The exception is if the final consonant is an 'L', when it is doubled irrespective of where the stress falls, but not in American English.
