I have G?O???E and want to enter GOODBYE (from the definition), but why?

I have subscribed to this thread as I'd really like to know from the experts. I can't see a link to the clue and your letters at all.

Strangely if you didn't have those letters placed and it was 8 letters (2 big ifs) then the answer to me would obviously be an anagram of welfare with L for student giving 'farewell'
