Mikey bemoaned the poor use of English by a single Tesco employee
( http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/ChatterBank/Question1468296.html )
but I wonder if anyone else here has noticed that every Morrison's store in the country has an 'employee' who doesn't know the difference between 'accepted' and 'excepted'?
I'm referring to the self-service tills where, when you scan your loyalty card, a recorded woman's voice helpfully tells you "Match and More Card excepted".
There used to be a large A-frame sign outside the filling station in a now-extinct service area on the A40 near Monmouth, that proudly said :::: " All Major cards excepted ! " When I asked why they didn't take any cards at the station, it took me some time to explain. But months later, the sign was still there !
My local Morrissons has closed and I hate using those self-service tills anyway.
I do get annoyed by people not knowing the difference between those two words, though.
I usually prefer self-service tills to the staffed ones but that doesn't prevent me from being annoyed every time I hear that announcement.
My own diction might be less than perfect at times but I hope that, if I was ever to be asked to record something to be used thousands of times every day across the whole country, I'd take care to get it right! (I'd also hope that those who were paying for the recording would take the trouble to check it!)
