i don't have the crossword to know whether your letters for 1d are wrong or not, but the answer i've given seems to fit the clue
Holiday Inn is right for 1d - published in 1942. Am also finding this is a struggle - Broteas in in a different league to Praxiteles. 21a is an anagram, the answer a book title

I agree about the crossword, but it is part of a trend. The crosswords are becoming unliterary - take 5a for example. I have written to the editor, Robert Pottso, but have been met with blandness and coyness ie he is a bit of a self satisfied ***. The Literary Monthly is a better magazine with a better crossword. You pays your money........
