13a. Hit it off, being mature (3,2). G?T ?N This could be GOT ON or GET ON, depending on one's choice of tense.
Any ideas would be appreciated - and interesting.

Get on is the correct answer.

Thanks, Danny. But it's the reasoning I'm after, not the solution.
1.To get on with someone is to hit it off with them
2.To get on is to age
'get on' sounds better for 'being mature'
^ as 'being' and 'get' are both present tense

I have to agree with you both. But if you're 90 you're not getting on. You got on!
Thanks, anyway.

As an octogenarian I prefer getting on ☺
If you're 90 you're still getting on, otherwise you're dead!
The two definitions in this clue are 'hit it off' and 'mature', and 'being' is a link between them, which should in effect be read as 'also being'. So '[to] hit if off [with]' (phrasal verb) = '[to] get on [with]' and '[to] mature' (verb) = '[to] get on'.
