Answers
The occupation of the Dublin Post Office was not a robbery, and cannot be compared to the Great Train Robbery. The motivation was not to steal, but to be the headquarters of a revolution. For the Republic it is a significant date, but I do not agree that an internationa l football match is the right place to celebrate

The Easter Rising is just an important part of Ireland's history as the Battle of Waterloo is in England's and is, quite rightly, being officially commemorated by the Irish Government:

What ever your politics the Easter Rising is a very emotive and significant event in the history of the Republic of Ireland and will be celebrated through out the country. The wearing of a shirt to commemorate the event would be no different to England wearing a shirt to honour the men who died at the at the Somme or Dunkirk or any one of the major events of in English history.

Got it in one Gromit. I'm all for commemorating the thing although it was really only because of the Brirish reaction to it they it gained any significance. However, having it on the football shirt seems bizarre. Then again the head of the FAI is a known IRA sympathiser so we should not be too surprised
When does a 'political image' simply become 'part of history', Thecorbyloon?
Should we, for example, prohibit England football fans from displaying the St George's Cross when playing Islamic nations? It is, after all, symbolic of the Crusades and thus grossly offensive to many Muslims.
Given that, up until recently, we expected French visitors to this country to alight from Eurostar services at at a station called 'Waterloo', perhaps we need to separate historical contexts from current meanings?

itchy - would you agreethat the Ukrainian team should commemorate the Great Hunger ( when Stalin staved 20 m ) in 1922 when they play Russian this year
or that naughty song ?
Remember that when Hungary played Russia in 1956 water polo one russian was found at the bottom of the pool - he survived
and you have AOG saying that it is great event in Irish History
rather than what it was - a disgusting kick at the glorious British Empire when it had its hands full fighting Germany
well done old boy Itchy ! well done !
please note exclamation markge used appropriately
