The Cruise Prize That Never Was

My son last month won The Sunday Times "Where Was I" compertition which was a 12 day cruise round the Baltic. He was given two dates in June to take the prize .As he has two children at school and his wife is a teacher he could not go on these date nor would they swop lt for another cruise. So he could not take it as there was no other alternative. So he got nothing. What a fiddle

But its not a fiddle. Those dates would have already been booked. Can't he take someone else?

In the T and C it usually says stuff like you can’t choose the dates and no alternative will be offered.

9. The prize is non-transferable and there are no cash alternatives to the prize in whole or in part.

Also in their general terms it says, "2. The winner is responsible for ensuring they are able to accept the prize as set out and in accordance with these terms and conditions, in the event they are unable to do so then the Promoter reserves the right to redraw the prize."

But no dates were given and 8 weeks is a bit short notice

It is disappointing but the chances of him being offered dates within the 6 week school holiday period were always going to be very slim.

I've also looked at today's competition and it quite clearly says you must take the holiday in Sep/Oct this year or May/June 2017. Maybe your son missed that in the T&Cs.

Holiday prizes are always going to be extremely restrictive in terms of dates and very, very rarely would you be able to take it within the school holidays.

Also, I don't think 8 weeks is short notice at all.

If someone enters a holiday competition expecting to be able to take it as and when they please, I'm afraid they're setting themselves up for disappointment.

I tend not to enter holiday comps partly for this reason,also,many only offer flights & hotels,no other expences which are often the most expensive par of the trip,particularly wher kids are included

Extras include(which are not part of the prize) Parking £100,Tips 249 dollars each,Wifi 249 dollars, Beers 5.95 dollars a bottle,glass of win 9.95 dollars a glass A bottle of wine at meal times 35 dollars a bottle .All these do not include 18 % tax. £15.00 visa at St Petersburg so you can add at least £1000 to your free holiday.

they're just that, extras (except tips, which are more or less expected). Always going to be tough taking a holiday if one of you is a teacher.

In all the years I have entered comps I have been cautious about what the end result maybe if I won , better not to enter than have this type of disappointment afterwards.


He must just put it down to experience.

It says in the t&cs about the prize....shouldn't have entered the competition if he could not travel at those dates I'm afraid.
