The robin is quintessentially British though. I receive christmas cards from people in Australia with the robin on them. The only other bird that I would think is typically British is the barn owl.
I love robins (our new, young one has just put in an appearance in our garden), but I would go for the wren as a national bird. Small, but punchy. Robin would be a close second.
