Am I the only one that can visualise a lorry packed explosive parked undeneath that bridge - which would probably be outside the airfield security zone.

I hope so.
What bridge?
runways over motorways have existed for years at Paris CDG and Fort Lauderdale, and taxiways cross motorways at other airports such as Schiphol and Leipzig. there are construction rules to mitigate against airfield incidents, and driver distraction. so far there's been no instances of explosives under airport bridges any more than there have been explosive incidents in any of the several motorway tunnels or covered ways on the european road network (a truck bomb would be unlikely to cleanly blow up an aircraft simply because it would be almost impossible to get the timing right).
Its one of the favourite past times for terrorists in NI.

Park a van under a bridge pack it full of explosives see how long it takes the PSNI to find it!!

Does one have a link please?
The existing northern runway runs across the main access road into Heathrow airport, so any terrorist planning on detonating a bomb underneath a runway wouldn't have to wait until the new one is built.

Many airports already have runways and/or taxiways running over motorways, e.g.Leipzig:

That's a pretty good one Chris, Thanks.
Don't know why folks don't post 'em with their OP's.
Surely if a runway is strong enough to bear the weight of the biggest fully-loaded aircraft, it is going to be strong enough to withstand the sort of bomb a bunch of terrorists could put together.
It's the resultant slope that might be problematic: apparently at a certain level it disables fog landing equipment. I guess other airports manage that. But the monstrosity that is Heathrow? I'm sure they'll sort it out :-)
I cant understand that map Chris but my parents & ext relations are buried in a nearby cemetary.
