To look for sources of tension between the nations of the UK, one need look no further than the ridiculous devolution arrangements brought in by the Blair government. Governments should introduce measures that promote cohesion and not establish those which will clearly lead to division. All constituent parts of the UK should be treated in the same way. The “West Lothian” question has never been addressed; the conflicts between the Scottish and English/Welsh legal systems remain. Devolution has only sought to enhance those differences with the matters that have been devolved to the “parish councils” being treated completely differently. There is no justification for devolving an enhanced per capita budget to a Scottish Parliament which need pay no regard to the wider needs of the remaining 92% of the UK.
I must say I have not followed any “EVEL” matters in Parliament but if the Scots believe their position has been compromised that’s just hard luck. The best thing they can do is sacrifice their devolved assemblies.
“Ms Blackman said: “This dog’s breakfast of a procedure has relegated Scottish MPs,”
Then they now know how English MPs must feel when they had no say over devolved Scottish matters but sat and watched Scottish MPs vote on matters that effect only their English constituents. The Dogs’ breakfast is the devolution arrangements themselves. They should never have been countenanced and the chickens have been coming home to roost for some time.
