7 -0 +1 =8
If there'd been brackets, it would have been 1

As it is it's 8
It depends on the order you do the operations.
I was taught BIDMAS - Brackets first then indices, divide. multiply,
add, subtract.
So your example would be
7-(1x0)+3/3 = 7-0+1=8
rather than
(7-1)x0+3/3 = 6x0+1=1
Always better to use brackets for clarification
(7-1)x 0=0+(3/3)=1
^ what Calibax said. :-)

so how can 85+71 x 0.35

and the 35 is 35 pence

my way i get £54.60

the "right" way you get £109.85

why cant we just stick the way i was taught - rather the bodmas or bodmis or whatever it called
I get £54.60 as well.

Show me the other way, please.
Never mind, done it the other way...£109.85
.....again brackets would help. :-)
85 +24.85 (71x0.35)=109.85
Question Author
i understand that brackets would help

but if you put the sum into google it automatically does it the "new" way

and puts the brackets in

i was just selling two items that both had the same price (£0.35 each)

so 71+ 85 x £0.35 each should be £54.60

not £109.85

i think we all agree on that don't we ?
