Peers Back New Slimmed Down House Of Lords
8 Answers
Turkeys voting for Christmas? I doubt it will happen. Betty Boothroyd said that Cemeron, and other PMs have tarnished the reputation of the Lords by stuffing it with ex advisers as lobby fodder. And remember Blairs Cash for peerages!!
Get rid of the lot of them and have elective representatives in the Upper House.

All Governments, of whatever political hue, are quite content to stand by and watch the Lords from afar. But when they see that the Lords is interfering with the Governments business, its then that they start complaining.
Forr the last 6 years, the Lords seem to be a thorn in the Tories side, but they have also been the same to Labour in the past, and will again in the future.
There has been a huge improvement of course, since the days of old, when the Lords were stuffed full with inherited Peers, but a fully elected Upper House is the only way forward.
Watch this space though !

Reform probably won't happen - but really should.
I'd settle for :
- 200 members
- Balance for sex/race/age etc
- No party affiliations to be allowed on electoral material
- No member to have ever been an MP (or member of equivalent body)
- All members to have had a 'proper job' - ie no wonkers who have done nothing but Politics and Media nonsense
- longish term (7 years?), but subject to strict attendance requirements
