We've had racists amongst us for decades. They've never needed an excuse before, so why now?

I don't know if there was a spike or not, but I do know we ought not be swayed from doing what is needed for fear that some might act poorly using it as an excuse.

I recall some prominent Twitter users urging people to report anything and everything to the police.

No, they created a dedicated phone line to report hate crime, and the snowflakes are reporting anything and everything as a hate crime because they are getting upset on behalf of other people.

Anyone can log on to a police website and report a hate crime its the actual arrests and charges that make the difference.

But these figures need to be taken with a fistful of salt. There is something wrong with the way we report and measure hate crimes in this country. The numbers do not necessarily speak to any objective spread of hate in modern Britain. On the contrary, what the BBC calls an ‘epidemic’ is a product of the authorities redefining racism and prejudice to such an extent that almost any unpleasant encounter between people of different backgrounds can now be recorded as ‘hatred’.

So an argument between two people of different races, creeds, colours religions or sexuality CAN be classed as a hate crime and not just an argument.

Webbo, the question is, was there a rise in reported hate crime after the referendum result ?. The sources I quoted all agree that there was.
Of course, not every reported crime results in a prosecution, that is as true for 'hate crime' as it is for other types of crime.

EDDIE51, so they could be made up crimes with out any prosecutions, as I pointed out earlier, anyone can report a hate crime, some have been proven to be fake.

So if a white person insults another white person by calling them thick it's OK. If the same white person then calls a black person thick then can that is a hate crime. It's a ridiculous law that is open to abuse by the usual trouble makers who go looking for offence on behalf of others.

It is a 'hate crime' if the insult is due to ethnicity, skin colour, age,gender, religion or disability.
