I went to church yesterday, with one of my visitors who attends church regularly. It was the Eucharist service.

I got very befuddled with all the sung responses and the standing up and sitting down. I didn't know any of the hymns except one and that was sung in too high a key for me. I sat alone whilst everyone went to receive the communion but didn't feel conspicuous.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of sitting in an ancient, beautiful building with the sun streaming through the stained glass windows. The words and deeds meant very little to me and I just lost myself in the serenity of the environment. I did enjoy the sermon though.

I'm glad I went but I won't be making a habit of it.

Tilly at 7.something. One of the huge differences between Protestants and R.Cs. is the transubstantiation issue, goes back to Henry VIII and the whole split with the Pope. Protestants regard the bread and wine as symbolic; R.C.'s as literal. We have one member of the congregation who is an R.C. (married to one of the churchwardens) and he cannot bring...

It's good you got some enjoyment in a beautiful setting too and you made your friend happy I'm sure.

You won't becoming a nun then, Tilly :-)
BTW, I had the misfortune of attending a catholic requiem mass. Lots of incense, water being splashed everywhere and ringing bells. There was also plenty standing up, sitting down and responding .

Mr T is a catholic and I have been to lots of Requiem masses and marriage ceremonies which seem to go on for ever and ever, Melv.

They are things to be endured, usually.

The Higgs-Boson walks into a Catholic church - the priest says "We don't allow Higgs-Bosons in here, you know."

He replies, "You can't do that. Without me or my Higgs-Boson relatives, how can you have any mass, never mind high mass?"

I'll pretend that I know what you are talking about, DTC. ;-)

There were no collisions!
As long as the marriages go on for ever and ever, Tilly.

Amen to that, Jno.
A requiem Mass is no longer than 1 hour, unless it is for a Bishop or someone of high standing. The incense smells beautiful and there is not much Holy Water sprinkled.
The service is for the deceased, not a peepshow.
And awomen of course. And they must sing hers as well as hims.

I paid attention to these things in Sunday school.

The church we went to is in a little hamlet with a row of black and white beamed Tudor cottages backing on to the church yard. It's really beautiful.

Clare, I am not deriding the services but as a non-catholic, the catholic services I have been to seem to be very long and slightly confusing.

The bit I don't like is when you have to shake hands with everyone and say, 'Peace be with you'. I do not like that part!
Sounds a lovely Hamlet
Agree with Tilly about the 'Peace' bit. We dropped it. I must say, though, that a proper Anglican High Mass puts the Vatican to shame.
I do not like the handshake either, which is why I try to get a little spot out of the way ~ not always easy. Ah God loves a trier.

One of the words I was searching for in my OP post was 'solace'. It came to me today, as I was re-reading the thread.
