It's beautifully made (in Britain), it smells gorgeous, it looks lovely in the sitting room and... it is so uncomfortable! The cushions are hard and it is so high that my feet don't touch the floor when I sit on the settee.

The one in the shop was fine. I am really unhappy with the purchase. Can I send it back? Will it 'soften up'?

Well it certainly sounds like the measurements are different from the one you tried for a start - contact them.

I shall be going back to the showroom tomorrow, with my tape measure, Mamya.
well, you could start by measuring your legs, I suppose. Do they expand in a welcoming showroom environment?
Question Author
They expand in the heat, Jno, but it wasn't particularly warm in the showroom.

once made that mistake..looked nice but........
It will soften but takes a while we have one in the good 'parlour ' and it's taken 3 years but that's because it's only sat on occasionally

The three piece that is now in the garage, awaiting a charity to collect it, is also a leather Chesterfied but it has squashy cushions and has always been really comfortable. I am so upset that we have spent so much money on something which, at the moment, I can't bear to sit on. Mr T's ok with it but it will take me a while to get used to it. Grrrr!
Hi Tilly2, I would postpone the charity collection, just in case. Once it's gone it's gone.
I like the look of chesterfields, but would rather have more back/neck support in a sofa. I reckon they're for the guests.

Sam, I'm hoping that the showroom will take it back. The one in the garage is going. We've had it for twenty odd years and it needs a new home.
Yes Tilly2, but what will you sit on if they agree to take it back. I have never found it easy to get furniture from stock.
Question Author
I know, Sam. We had to wait for ten weeks for this to be made but we do have other easy chairs. They can be brought into use.

I'm not worried about what we'll be sitting on. I'm more concerned that they may not take it back.
Tilly - this is a massive thorn in our sides - Sista and mine - they (suites) generally feel like bricks - so so difficult to get a comfy suite.

Good luck with your return (if it goes that way) no - don't throw out the one in the garage.

Always use John Lewis, never had a problem.
Also new leather can be cold.
Only just seen this Tilly. Our leather suit was exactly the same my feet were dangling too but after a couple of weeks it was absolutely fine. Don't forget the one in the showroom had been perched upon by many people and had bedded in and I'm sure yours will soften up and be the same.

Thanks Margo. That's reassuring. I suppose I could always get a little footstool, if we do keep it. I'll see what the shop says today.
Did you get a feee tantalus and cigar Tilly ;-)

Funnily enough, Eccles...
That's a Shame, Tilly. Chesterfield sofas are gorgeous to look at xx
