And despite some lukewarm comments this was a good Listener from an established setter whose puzzles I've always enjoyed.
These are some of the qualities for which it deserves credit: the grid is perfectly Ximenean - no giveaways in entries with no unchecked letters; some of the clues are delightful, and quite deceptive in places; then there were several thematic PDM's en route.
Thanks, Llig.

Yes, indeed, Scorpius and Olichant. It was an elegant compilation with thematic unity and a series of PDMs. I've said before how I firmly believe that there is room for a wide range of difficulty levels in the Listener and for a solver who is disgruntled because she finishes too quickly, there is, for example, the Magpie, the EV or the IQ (take a look at that in the I today!)
I thought this was a very enjoyable puzzle. Even when I had discovered the theme, I still found myself wondering how to complete several of the down entries, until eventually - much later than it should have done - the penny really did drop at last. I still find myself musing over what the exact form of one down entry should be (and not because of the effect of thematic modification): to me, the wordplay in this case seems slightly ambiguous, but as no-one else seems to have had any problem, it's probably just me! Good fun, though - thanks, Llig.
