A little help please?

The first four replies in this thread appeared to be giving clues - which seem consistent with the nature of the request. The remainder provide actual answers. I often see comments made in threads like this that the quiz setter has stated "clues only - no answers!"

I am sometimes reluctant to post a response in case I say the wrong thing.
