Why not ask the friend to tell you when the visit will take place and make a suitable choice whether a meal or something less than that ? I agree, mince pies are vile and so is "Christmas cake".

Do you know what time she'll be popping in and how long she's likely to stay?
Just treat like a visit at any other time of the year. Cuppa + biccie more than sufficient!
Question Author
don't like mince pies before someone suggests it.
Yep...drink and biscuit.
A drink and a slice of cake
Pork pie, sausage roll?
Will you have a bottle of something open anyway? That would answer the first part of your question without too much awkwardness.

no idea at this stage, what time, she suggested it the other day and i was delighted. we are having an early Christmas dinner at mine on the 15th where im doing 3 courses, which is Italian based. but i would like to at least have something to offer on the day,
Petit fours, chocolates.
Question Author
especially as its my birthday that day...
Question Author
wine and chocolates perhaps..
A nice warm Mince Pie, some cream, and a glass of something warming never goes amiss Emmie !
Question Author
petit fours, like what for instance..
Just seen your comments about Mince Pies Emmie.

Then instead, why not do some Devils on Horseback ?

dont like mince pies at all, not shop bought ones, and no idea or intention of making any.
Hi emmie,
If have some nice cheeses and crackers / sliced meats and nice bread in ... & wine.
Lidl have some beautiful praline milk chocolate hearts. That and some fizz would do nicely.

You could get some mini blinis from M&S if you wanted savoury.
I think I'd just offer her a drink (sherry?) with some chocolates - or if she'd prefer, a cup of tea or coffee with some nice biscuits. If she's only popping in I don't think you need to stand on ceremony or plan anything fancy.
Question Author
have some nice wines in the little cellar, so that could be a winner, unless she prefers tea then can do that.. with some nice biscuits, must then get some in.......
