Getting Checked For Breast Cancer

My 66yr old mum was diagnosed with breast cancer last November and has just completed her treatment .She was told early on that it was hormone related but more recently has been told that she also has the faulty gene that plays a factor alongside lifestyle choices.
There has been no other family members with breast cancer up to now as far as we know.
My question as her 46yr old daughter is what steps if any would my GP take. would I be checked with an early scan or would I be checked for this faulty gene ?...
I will be making a doctors appointment but jut curious as to what may be the course of action if anything?...

If you mother has the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, you can ask your GP to refer you to the Clinical Geneticists for tests to see if she has passed this on to you. You will probably see the Genetic Counsellor in the first instance.

I agree with NoM. You GP will decide on family history,type of cancer in the family(if known) and age of onset.
By the sounds of your post, he will arrange a genetic test for the 3 main abnormal genes.

IF you have the faulty gene, then you will be called for an annual breast scan or even an MRI scan.

You'll be very lucky if you can get a GP appointment next week - don't you know you have to predict a reason for an appointment at least 2-3 weeks in advance?

You can get a same day appointment at our GP's anytime diddlydo- they have pre bookeds for all the GP barring one who does a walk surgery every day.

Why did they do the BRCA on your Mum being that she is 66 years of age and she doesn't have any other relatives with it?

The details I get from my mum are very sketchy . I asked her about her test results and she hasn’t anything on paper ,she doesn’t know what gene is faulty and she wasn’t told by one of the doctors , It was a nurse . I think my mum had asked about the level of treatment she was having and was told by nurse that she had faulty gene and overproduction of oestrogen so they had to give her lumpectomy , chemo and then radiotherapy . Nurse told her that she should inform me but sounds odd the consultant hadn’t told her this or given her test results .
