Is There A Simple To Use, Free Alternative To 'word' For My 80 Year Old Dad?

He has 'cleaned' his computer and now he has nothing of any use to him! No publisher or word processing options.
All he wants to do is type the odd letter and print out some hobby related bits and bobs.
Is there one that's simple and free?

Open Office is a free office suite,and I use it with no issues whatsoever. x

There sure is, and I downloaded it on Saturday to my friend's computer. I've been using it for over 7 years with no problems:

You might have to re-install the printer, though, which you'd probably have to do with any such you download

Ha ha. Actually spent most of the weekend using OpenOffice to write the minutes of a wretched AGM I had to chair on Friday evening - so glad it's over, and a Reason To Be Cheerful this sunny morn :)

If he had a legal copy of word along with the installation code, he can re install it.

Every copy of Windows comes with a basic word processor called WordPad, a simplified version of Word.

Like others above, I use (and, indeed, I'm a great fan of) OpenOffice.

However, as Guilbert53 points out, Windows comes with both Notepad (which is a very basic text editor) and Wordpad (which is simple a word processor, much closer to Microsoft Word). Wordpad might well be all that your father needs.

Wordpad is accessed through click on the Start button and then on 'Accessories'. I suggest initially RIGHT-clicking on Wordpad and selecting 'Send to > Desktop (Create shortcut)' and/or right-clicking and selecting 'Pin to Taskbar'. Then the program will be available to your father from either his desktop or his taskbar in future.

I think the only trouble with WordPad is that there does not appear to have a spellchecker.
