Newspaper Prices

The cost of the Saturday Times has just gone up to £2, and £1.80 on weekdays. (Saturday Telegraph now £2.50). But I noticed The Guardian is now £3.20 on a Saturday, and £2.20 weekdays. Blimey - how do people afford that? I know they're cheaper with a subscription (which is what they really want from us), but even so, it's a huge amount for a daily paper.
Do all those who post about the Saturday Guardian crossword have a subscription?

Im surprised people buy a newspaper these days when all the news is online for free.

I must admit i do buy a Sunday paper to sit down with a cup of tea and relax its not quite the same reading online.

weekend papers typically have a lot more than news, that's why they cost more. Pretty well everything in the Guardian is free online, but to see most of what's in the Telegraph and the Times, you have to sign up and pay.

Waitrose self-scan (with handheld gun).....coffee 2.20, paper 3.20, a few items (minimum 4.60)....total 10.00. Minus 5.40 (free coffee, free paper) Total...4.60 to pay for goods, paper and coffee.
I really don't know how they continue with these "benefits".

I have a subscription to the Daily Mail for £9.99 per month (33.3p per day based on a 30 day month). It would not necessarily be my first choice for "news" but I do like the puzzle section. I complete the prize crossword every day and have won a couple of times in the last 3 years.

Buying the paper copy would mean a daily trek to a shop, in all weathers, paying out the cost and then going out again to a post box later, using an envelope and stamp.

Funnily enough, I have just set up a subscription for the weekend Guardian and Observer. They have an offer on at the moment and the cost is £15.57 per month for the next twelve months.

That's going to save me some money.

Times & Telegraph subscriptions are our must have luxuries these days. Now that we are both retired, we have more time to read them from cover to cover, do all the crosswords & sudokus, etc.

I remember having to stop taking The Times when the price rose from 10d to One Shilling...... but that was some sixty years ago.

Newspapers are inevitably slower than TV, radio and internet for the latest stories, so it is the other stuff that I buy them. I rarely have time to justify a daily but buy The Observer every Sunday. Their latest subscription offer is cheaper for the Saturday Guardian and Sunday Observer, but at least one of my favourite features, David Mitchell / Stewart Lee, is printed in both. I always welcome ways to save cash, but I am troubled that it pressures me to buy two newspapers when one would do, with the concomitant waste of paper.

When I first started buying papers in the early 60s all the dailies were 3d except the Guardian, 4d and the Tines, 5d.
