I need to get ointment onto my back, up under my shoulder blades, and I can’t reach. Mrs B helps of course, but at three in the morning I’m on my own. Any ideas for applicators?

A bath back brush with a cloth.
There will be a host of things to go out and buy, but for middle of the night solution, you could try using anything with a small handle.

Wooden spoon
Spatula
Paint brush
Toothbrush

I use a spatula, it's a flexible rubber headed one so very easy to just wash off.
Just had another thought, something I used when I had to try and replace dressings where I couldn't reach on my back, I live alone so had to get creative!

I used a loop of sellotape to stick the dressing to a door to line up height wise where I needed it to go. Maybe you could try the similar with something like an oval cotton wool pad with the ointment on it?
Sometimes we just need a third arm :*)
A wooden back-scratcher, I've got an oriental one with a small human hand carved on it!
You could make something similar from a 16" (40cm.) length of 3/8" (10 cm) wooden dowelling with an Elastoplast-bound tip.
You can buy dowelling at you local D.I.Y. store
I use the Backbliss applicator in Dannyk's link and find it very good.

Back of a wooden spoon sounds the job. I’ll try it.
Wrap it in cling film first, works better
when you find out let me know..have a terrible itch !!

Yes, it was the big wooden spoon (wrapped in clingfilm, thanks rowan) worked a treat. Eurax is good for itches. Best of luck.
Yes I second the Eurax recommendation only thing that really works for me.
