I live in Romford in Essex and my boyfriend lives in Beckenham in Kent. We've mentioned moving into together but he doesn't want to live in my area and i dont want in his! We both wouldn't like to be that far away from our friends and family. We have thought about going somewhere in the middle, so neither are very far away. The only thing is, the only place I can think of thats kind of in the middle is Dartford! Where else is in between these places? Thanks for any help.

No, you do not live in "Romford in Essex", because there is no such place. If you live in Romford, then by definition you live in the London Borough of Havering, which is in London, not Essex. Romford has not been in Essex since Greater London was created in 1964.

No, your boyfriend does not live in "Beckenham in Kent", because there is no such place. If he lives in Beckenham, then by definition he lives in the London Borough of Bromley, which is in London, not Kent. Beckenham has not been in Kent since Greater London was created in 1964.

Therefore you should both go and live in Croydon.

I used to live in Dagenham, ESSEX - My sister lives in Harold Hill, Romford, ESSEX - My other sister lives in Brentwood, ESSEX - My brother lives in Hornchurch, ESSEX.

I know Romford is in the London Borough of Havering, but ESSEX is what we call it & letters still get there.

Anyway, my other sister used to live in Bexleyheath, KENT, but perhaps Dartford may be a good option

That said - p'raps bernardo's idea will be even better.

No you didn't. Dagenham is in London, not Essex.

My sister lives in Harold Hill, Romford, ESSEX

No she doesn't. Romford is in London, not Essex.

My other sister lives in Brentwood, ESSEX

At last you are right about something. Brentwood is in Essex.

My brother lives in Hornchurch, ESSEX

No he doesn't. Hornchurch is in London.

I know Romford is in the London Borough of Havering

Ha! You have just contradicted yourself, and confirmed that I am right. You have admitted that Romford is in London, and therefore not in Essex.

but ESSEX is what we call it

You can call it Mongolia or The Moon for all I care. You will still be wrong.

& letters still get there.

That's because the people who run the Post Office (and who organise its own internal administration) are just as out of touch with reality as you are. Like you, they do not seem to have noticed the changes which happened in the county boundaries in 1964.

Anyway, my other sister used to live in Bexleyheath, KENT

No she didn't. Bexleyheath is also in London.

Calm down bernardo - this is not a competition & I never once said you were wrong & I was right! (But of course you are always right!).

I still don't give a monkey's what these areas are supposed to be called - all I know is, that the people I know who still live there, refer to Dagenham, Romford & Hornchurch as Essex - that's it.

The people I know & still live in Bexleyheath, refer to it as Kent, that's it!

We are all very well aware of the borough changes in 1964, but don't have to succumb to every whim & old habits die hard! I & other's may appear to be out of touch with realtiy in your eyes, but that is only your opinion.

On to the next person bernardo......!

bernardo, stop being so pathetically pedantic!

Alixw, how about Eltham or Blackheath?

Just had to add this: Essex

Pedantic? Moi? Shurely not! It's not my fault if half the population of Romford and Dagenham and Hornchurch and Bexleyheath are ignorant of geography and therefore insane and therefore intent on the destruction of civilisation and therefore needing to be cut in half with a scythe. :-)
As eash suggests, Eltham or Blackheath are decent enough, but don't go for Kidbrooke in between. Sidcup is good as is Orpington but your then getting closer to Beckenham.

As a rule of thumb I say anywhere between the M2 and the Thames is a bit of a dump, so thats Plumbstead, Woolwhich Bexelyheath, Thamesmead etc. Anything bellow the M2 is pretty decent, Sidcup, Bexely Village, Orpington, Eltham etc etc,

Thanks for the Geography lesson Bernardo - but as with Smudge I'm not going to start saying I live in London - as far as I'm concerned I always have and will live in Essex. Croydon isn't exactly where I was thinking of it terms of moving as its 10 minutes away from my boyfriend.

Thank you everyone else though for your ideas!
