In police dramas, the technical people always seem to be able to retrieve deleted data from laptops, thereby helping the TV detective solve the crime. But would this be the same for a tablet, especially reformatted ones, as they don't have hard drives?

Yes, in general they could, they do have hard drives, they have storage which is much the same thing. The only vaguely sure way of preventing such retrieval would be a program/app to overwrite the entire storage (multiple times) with different information or to completely physically destroy it.

Thanks Fitzer for your answer. I did wonder, as so many people use tablets these days, but in police dramas they always seem to only have laptops, which are then impounded.
