Does education prevent addictions?
Educate all you want. We all know that
Drinking rots the liver,
Smoking rots the lungs,
Drugs rot everything,
Gambling splits up families,
Porn causes conflict with ur partner,
etc
Remind me again, just how does education prevent addictions?
I missed it!
To the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever suggested that education will ever prevent all cases of addiction. The aim has to be to minimise the numbers of people succumbing to such addictions and there seems good evidence that such an aim is largely achievable. (e.g. if you teach kids about the dangers of smoking, you won't stop all of them from taking up the habit but you will prevent many of them from doing so).
Nailit..... I was unsure whether or not the post about the uneducated meant those who had had a poor education or those who were not educated about the danger of addiction.
Either way it was a pretty uneducated post.
You and I both know that neither having had a top notch education nor being educated about the perils of addiction will have any effect on those who become addicted to the things you have listed.
It may be possible to prevent a few from starting an addiction, although the likelihood is that they will start a different one instead. Addictive behaviour is inherited from parents mostly. Occasionally, people may be triggered to start... but not because they believe it is healthy. Usually, just the opposite.

Interesting thought Pix. Any links?
Got to say that both my parents were sober as judges. Dad drank a little once a week, mum may have had the occasional G&T. Dad smoked but gave up. Neither had any addictions that I could point to.
Im the black sheep with an alcohol problem tho (other addictions in the past...mostly prescription type drugs, benzo's etc).
Any links to look at would be appreciated tho. Thanks
I can have a look for you, nails x this is something I learnt about before the internet was invented though. It wouldn't necessarily be obvious in your parents, but it is a part of your brain/ character, which can make you a lot more susceptible than others x
Just want to say that this idea that if you were educated around XYZ that you therefore wouldn't commit XYZ is the most ignorant/stupid remark that Ive ever come across.
//Nailit - have you done any damage to yourself through drinking?//
My last blood test showed that my liver levels were somewhat not what they should be ummm but not to bad considering.
//Are you on medication nailing?//
Tramadol, and just been prescribed sertraline RR.
