In future stretcher bearer maybe ought initially to provide cover (4)

I get that the answer is HOOD but can anyone parse it for me please? I thought it might be O (ought initially) in HOD but don't see how we get to HOD from the rest of the clue.

Thanks

Hood

Hod round o(ught)
a hod is a carrier of bricks, that builders use. A stretcher is a brick that is laid lengthways, rather than end-on. Thus, a hod can be a stretcher bearer.
Would never have got that. I am still unsure what part 'in the future' plays in the clue
Because the brick might not be used as a stretcher - might be laid end-on
Thanks, but sorry, I still don't get that. Never mind, I'll move on
I apologise for net reading and therefore parsing the answer properly.

As said above, in the hod they are all just bricks, in future when laid some will be stretchers.

Thanks all - the bit i was missing was the meaning of "stretcher" as describing a course of bricks laid end to end. Or an individual brick that has been laid lengthways. That explains the "in future" bit - while they are in the hod they are not yet stretchers or (I now learn) headers. Tricky parsing if you ask me.
Thought it was quite a tricky puzzle today - but I like those!
