chain gang
6 Chain gang
pole if clue says Staffs?
a yard of cloth sounds vaguely familiar
(it was 37 inches)
Question Author
Thanks fiction-factory and shoota. Should have got chain gang! The clue says Staffordshire, can you explain pole please? I thought of a yard of cloth but I've already got yard for No.13 ? Stick.
an ell of cloth?
a staff can be a stick or pole or rod
pole and rod were both measurements of length.
But doesn't work if clue says Staffordshire
//Ell. ... An ell (from Proto-Germanic *alinō, cognate with Latin ulna) is a unit of measurement originally understood as a cubit, the combined length of the forearm and extended hand.//
8 Staffordshire Knot is a type of fastening(ropes etc). A Knot is also a nautical measure.
Staffordshire one could be Stone (a place in Staffs. Or if St is abbreviation for Staffordshire the Staffordshire one= ST one)
Question Author
Thanks elliemay1 that's a good suggestion. Of course a staff can be a pole, fiction-factory, my mind just wasn't thinking that way! If I can't think of anything else I'll use that answer despite it not really fitting the clue. Thanks everyone for your help
knot is better
Question Author
Sorry, Davemano, hadn't seen your answer - that sounds good, thanks. Also fiction-factory, another good idea! Will make my choice, thanks again for your help.
Question Author
Thanks shoota for adding that suggestion for the cloth as I hadn't realised I already had Ell as another answer! I'd never heard of that - it's amazing what you learn on the AB!
It's what we used to call a length of cloth in Yorkshire but I never knew it was a specific length so I didn't suggest it earlier...
