Capone- cap(cover) + one(a)
Yes, I'm moving in favour of CAPONE
Just seen that, despite being a Chicago hoodlum, Scarface was born in NY.
Well I'm not!
Capone was born in New York but he was known as a "Chicago" villain, not New York.

It could be either Capone or Hood, but until we get the answer, I favour HOOD.

I don't like "Yank" at all, and although "canopy" may also probably be correct, I still prefer HOOD
JJ, he started his life of crime in New York becomimg a member of criminal gangs.

can't wait for mouseymick to make an appearance :-)
@Mulder, in the puzzle are there spaces for a 4 letter word which have double letter number indicators in spaces 2&3. If not then the answer is likely to be Capone, but if there is the answer is likely to be Hood. Then we can forget this debate.
Danny - please read what has gone on before - you haven't added anything that we did not already know!
Let's wait for mouseymick.
The answer is HOOD, but YANK also fits in the grid. There are no words of 6 letters beginning with 'C' so CAPONE and CANOPY are out. Can only think that HOOD is a New York expression for villain
It is (well it's an American term I think but NY is a proxy for America (just as crosswords might say in Paris to indicate the answer is a French word)
HOOD 4,7,7,3 Z is 10 W is 19
That settles it then, thanks Dave.
Yank .. 6,22,17,9 ... Q is 20 and H is 4.
A misleading clue, I concentrated on the NY for New York and the Yank as the ‘villain’ ... it works!
Ps it works with HOOD as well. Very strange!
yes agree I went and bought paper its hood ,it's the daily express not star
I'm not sure why it's a misleading clue mouseymick. I still can't see how the wording could lead to YANK. If the NY comes from new York where would the AK come from?
^^ and where is the cover if the answer is Yank ?
Capone
Thud!
