How To Cut 70Mm X70Mm Wood

Hey everyone we have decided to make some wooden storage inthe garage and outside. We have bought the wood, joints etc but what is the best way to cut 70mmx70mm wood? Would a circular saw do? Or must we do it by hand. We do have a small ryobi circular saw but I think the depth is like 40mm max. We took this awesome photo of the wood we just bought http://imgur.com/gallery/4E1ypb9

The best I can suggest, is to clamp it well, then run down it with the Ryobi set on full 40mm depth.
Then, turn it over and use the Ryobi on the other side. The two 40mm cuts should join up.

But... it's going to make the circular saw work really hard, and possibly get stuck along the way.
Also, you would need a TCT blade (tungsten carbide tipped) to have any chance of success. It would have to be pretty sharp as well.

Depends on how much cutting you are getting involved with. I tend to do it by hand unless I have a lot. Try with whatever tools you have and use what seems easiest.

I'm assuming here, that since it's for garage storage shelves, there's a whole load of it to cut. Not just one piece.

I was assuming that you wanted to cut it longways to make smaller sections.

Yes... use an ordinary panel saw to crosscut into shorter lengths. ;o)))

I thought that was a possibility initially too, but reconsidered before posting as I thought it unlikely if making a frame for shelves ;-)

So just a normal hand saw will do? Its just with our lack of experience it takes a while and we can never get a straight edge. Is it doable with a circular saw as we watched a video and said the depth of the blade should be under the thickness of the wood. We never used the saw before you see its for decking and laminate flooring

UK, how many cuts do you have to do? If you can't cut straight with a handsaw, I suspect you wouldn't be able to do it with a circular saw, and circulars are potentially much more dangerous. Maybe you should pay someone to cut the wood for you.
Are you going to be able to put the wood together after it's cut? You'll presumably need to drill and screw.

Ok thanks then we will try by hand hehe 8m sure will improve we have about 20 cuts or so. We have the 90 degree joints with holes in and some wood screws. Do we have to drill a hole into the wood first in order to attach the joints ir just screw the screws straight in? Attaching to the floor seams easy as the wood slots into like a metal square we drill to the floor. Thanks again for the answers we are such noobs to this

Go to B&Q or somewhere like, & buy a new handsaw, not expensive & worth doing a lot cheaper than buying electric tools particularly if you aren't planning on lots of work projects.

Though I sharpen my own old Disston hand, panel & tenon saws with files & a saw-horse, though I'm probably among the last of those that do (or can do) this.

Khandro my oh wants to make a saw horse it a proper one. We bought 2 flimsy ones from the DIY store and 1 of them already broke. What timber should we buy to make one? My oh says a man is not a man until he has made his own saw horse and this is the person who can barely saw straight hehe

I think the kind of saw-horse you mean isn't the one I mean. The one for sharpening saws is a frame about 4metres high in which the saw is trapped between 2 slats of wood while it is sharpened.

What you want is made from a piece of 4"x 2" or 3 with four 3"x2" legs (approx. sizes). The tools you need are a saw, an adjustable bevel & a 1" chisel I'm sure there's a youtube on it somewhere.

Also, if you lay the saw across the timber, you'll find that it is exactly 90 degrees between the handle and the blade. Use this to mark a line with a pencil. (Horizontal cut.)
Then lay the handle on top of the timber again, but this time with the blade hanging down. This will give you a 90 degree vertical line for cutting. Vertical cut.)

*** Respect to Khandro. I haven't sharpened a Disston since 1985 ;o)

B. I don't do much joinery/ant.rest. /work anymore, (none really!) so mine also stay sharp for ages too :0) I couldn't for the moment remember whether Disston had 1 or 2 ss' looked it up & amazed to see how much old Disston saws are being sold for, or at least asking prices.

70 x 70 is nothing at all with a new hand saw. It would take seconds. Buy yourself a square and mark two adjoining faces of a scrap piece of wood. Clamp it to a bench and just cut a 1" piece off, using both the lines for guidance. Repeat this a number of times and within half a dozen cuts you will see an improvement in your manual cutting abilities.

If you go down the circular saw route have a plan in place as well as a first aid kit..
Who will drive to A&E,
A small plastic box and ice to put the fingers in etc.
