Net Curtains Revitalised

Getting things ready for Mrs A's possible homecoming, I had a go at the net curtains in the bedroom - the damp bedroom. The bottom six or more inches of the nets was black-stained with wet mould.

Couldn't shift it, so sent them to my local laundry (who've been washing and tumbling my stuff for the past six weeks). The result? They look like new! Sparkling white, not a hint of the horrible stains, and now they're back up, a good welcome home for Mrs A.

I'm sure there's old-wives remedies which don't involve spending money at laundries, but this certainly worked.

I use net whitener on mine, which you can buy at Wilko and usually supermarkets. That said my nets are not really dirty, just in need of a freshen up.

Your next job Allen is to sort out what's causing the damp or they will be black again before too long. Open the window for a start. You might need a dehumidifier in there through the winter, not on all day but now and again.

We’ve always had the radiator turned off in the bedroom, liking a bit of ‘coolth’, but if we can be disciplined enough, I suppose it should be turned on for a couple of hours a week.

I agree about opening the windows regularly - even on vent at night if it a bedroom that is being slept in. Use mould remover and your mould problem should soon be gone.

Allen its not just heat you need but air circulation. You can have a warm room but if the air doesn't circulate it will get mouldy again.

Turning the radiator on won't help with the mould - you need to keep the room ventilated whilst you are sleeping in it. Windows on vent and door open

Yes, definitely sort the damp mould out. For health reasons above all else.

That should help. I get a bit of damp in my bedroom so I now open the window every day for an hour or two. No net curtains, only blinds.

Also this is the room we’re thinking of putting a tumble dryer in. Will that make any difference?

Clean away all mould with bleach, ventilate well but you will need warmed air to create the circulation effectively. Try windowsill dehumidifiers if it's an ongoing problem.

allen, it should help! The tumbledryer will produce heat and you will either need the window open to vent it or it will dry the air it takes in from the room....either way you will need the windows open.

Allen, if you are going to use a tumble dryer in that room it really must be very well ventilated. Even if it is a condenser keep the windows open whilst it is in operation and if it isn't, make sure the hose is outside the window.
That warm, moist air created by tumble dryers will not help the mould situation.

No hose, just a condenser type. Didn’t realize you had to have a window open.

I've got a condenser dryer in my garage and although it is nowhere as bad as a vented one the air can still get a bit damp. I wouldn't want to sleep in the same room as my dryer.

All I know, Allen, is that my condensor dryer empties in to the drain but still the air in the garage seems a bit damp when the dryer has been running for a while, unless I open the window. My garage is more of utility room, is insulated and heated in the colder months.
