Actual bodily harm (ABH) is the lesser offence of the two, where the injury to the victim causes pain but not a wound - eg punching someone, causing bruising and swelling but no laceration. In GBH there is pain caused by wounding - eg stabbing or slashing with a knife. The maximum sentence for ABH is 5 years; for GBH, life. If you are personally involved in a criminal case involving ABH or GBH, you should probably consult a solicitor.
