Some years ago, I think it was prior to the first of "New" Labour's victories, I joked that if the country elected a Labour government, it risked seeing Dennis Skinner installed as the Foreign Secretary. I thought it couldn't get any worse, but more recently we had the prospect of Diane Abbott rising to one of the four great offices of State. Once that threat was lifted I really thought it couldn't get any worse. But I was wrong.
