Some really puzzling bits of wordplay by Crucible this Saturday. e.g. 14 ac: Boss’s sore back leads to withdrawal from society. (9) With the letters I have and definition must be RECLUSION, but WHY? Also: Smoke that surrounds local star. (CORONA). And: Large plain stable dam. (MARE), although I guess that part of the double definition is mare = the ‘seas’ on moon’s surface.

14a Reclusion - No 1's (boss's) + 'ulcer' (sore) (all back) 20d Corona - a cigar (smoke) & the halo around the Sun 4d Mare - double definition; large plain (on moon, eg) & stable dam (horse)
