Monthly quiz all about 'North'. Struggling with the following:
1. Town without a South End (7)
2. The mad(?) King's wife's present home (5,8)
3. They once could fill their boots legally by going up north (5,5,7)
4. The old way to get to Edinburgh (4)
Thanks all.
Still struggling with these two:
3. They once could fill their boots legally by going up north (5,5,7)
4. The old way to get to Edinburgh (4)
Could 3 be an anagram of 'their boots legally'. Can't fathom it myself.
Re: North British Railway Company established Edinburgh 1846. NBRC.??
Could be Mark. Makes sense, yet having a four-letter acronym as an answer for a four-letter clue seems to grate against my quizzing ethics. Is that a thing?
Suggestion was only based on the fact that you indicated the clue or answer would refer to "north" - only abbreviated term would, therefore, include "north" unless the setter is referring to Edinburgh as a northern place? I agree it is unusual to have the answer in initials form unless requested.
Might it have something to do with the meaning of the phrase ''fill their boots'':
//English coal miners wore hobnailed boots which were slippery on cobblestone streets, so they carried them home after work so they wouldn't slip.//
Possibly Mark. Though for the life of me I can't see an answer that would work. Will keep at it. If you have any ideas please give me a shout here. Cheers.
