I don't thinks that the basic concept is totally nuts. The problem, as I see it, is that often when humans tinker with the natural world they usually make catastrophic errors.

Once set free how do they get the mosquitoes to obey further commands? :-)

it is a bit schoolboy / James Bond. Leaving aside, the green issues ( intorducing foreign species into an aread ) - you could culture dangerous viruses - say yellow fever, but then get it into a few million mosquitoes without a million infections in humans

and they dont give rise to mosquito babies with yellow fever , they have to get that off a human... - mozzies live 10d ( male) and up to 40 d in females, longer than I suspected.
