I’ve not managed to crack this yet either.
To add some extra info : the grid is 4 squares across and 5 squares down
So across clues have 4 letters and down clues 5 letters
The numbering goes 4,3,2,1 across the top left to right and 1,2,3,4 down wards (at left hand side )

is that 1a and 1d or do we have top work out which is the across clue and which is the down clue, etc?

Yes those are 1 across and 1 down clues
I.e. The first words blue yonder has given are across clues and the second the down clues .
I am trying this correct spelling ,then back to front but can’t get any words to fit the “ down” clues whichever way I write them .
I must be missing something here!
