Thank you, klazomaniac, for your reply. I'm sure you are right that TRACES = "finds" and ER is a "show of uncertainty". But there is no indicator that TRACES should go around ER and, even more confusingly, the first words of the clue are "With no show of.....", which actually suggests TERRACES should lose ER to give the answer TRACES (finds). But that is back to front parsing for the answer to be TERRACES.

I think this is a subtractive clue. One where the Answer is found and the wordplay subtracts.

Therefore 'Terraces' minus ER
[With no] Show of uncertainty [ER] = Traces [finds]

It's a reversed constucted clue IMO.
